Today we have no community, so there’s very little
satisfaction in extending yourself through your
family. Women have no fulfillment in having children
if their children live thousands of miles away and are
perpetually on the move. Mobility has destroyed the
community in the 20th century. But mobility,
pushed a little further, restores community. At
much higher speed, we are once more able to
associate all the time with people who are now far
away.
Linda Sandler, “An Informal Interview with Marshall
McLuhan,” Miss Chatelaine , Fall 1974.
